The Philippines is one of the five countries that produce 50% of the world’s plastic waste. Studies from previous years show that the country produces 6,237,653 kg or 6875.84 tons of plastic per day. And on top of that, 81% of those wastes are mismanaged. By which means that most of these plastics go to the canal, rivers, and eventually to the ocean, causing pollution not only in the urban areas populated by people but also in habitats of animals.

Many advocates, scholars and scientists have suggested various solutions to mitigate the threats to our environment and to us people as well. Some solutions can only be done my experts but most of them can be done by anyone who is willing enough to do their own little contribution.

These solutions are not only keeping the environment clean and its inhabitants safe, but they are also trendy and will save you money in the long run.

1. Reusable straw

Data from studies show an alarming amount of plastic produced every day. So if we want to lower those statistics, we can start with replacing plastic straws with reusable ones. Plastic straws are one of the easiest to replace because it’s small and could seemingly appear as inconsequential but they are a big help too! While you’re at it, why not use reusable utensils as well?

2. Use less paper

Emails are now the fastest and most convenient way to reach people. Which also means we have a more efficient way to reduce our use of paper in mails or billings. Recycle scratch or blank papers into new notebooks or memo pads. If possible, avoid printing too.

3. Bring your own shopping bag

How often do you do your grocery shopping? Twice to thrice a week? Imagine the amount of plastic you can produce with your frequent shoppings. Using your own bag helps tremendously with that.

4. Opt for natural cosmetics and household products

Chemicals in the products we use go to the trash or down the drain. And since the Philippines have major mismanagement issues on wastes, these chemicals are sure to reach our oceans and lands. Chemical pollution is worst because it can be lethal quickly, harder to contain and takes longer to be mitigated. So look for products made from natural ingredients – which are safe for you and the environment.

5. Invest in sustainable products

Some everyday items we use usually go to the trash after 2-3 uses. Contribute in helping the environment and put your money to good use by investing it to causes that matter and last longer than a few usage – like sustainable stainless steel tumblers than plastic cups.
