Iloilo City has been in the list of one of the most progressive cities in the Philippines over the past years. In fact, it was named second as the most competitive city in the country, hailed as number one in governance in 2018, and this year it ranked 8th as one of the safest cities to live in  Southeast Asia – alongside with cities of Singapore, Hanoi in Vietnam, Penang in Malaysia, Bangkok in Thailand and  Bali in Indonesia. It is undeniable that the City of Love is well on its way to becoming an urban paradise both for the locals and foreigners.

The city, which was previously monikered as Queen City of the South in the old times, has maintained and nurtured  its cultural aspects while keeping an eye on urban development. Iloilo has seen several modernizations within the last ten years such as the entry of Megaworld, expansions of The Esplanade into other key areas, and introduction of air-conditioned metro buses for mass transit. Economically, the city has seen a rapid growth due to the international hubs such as the Iloilo International Airport and the increase in employment through investors establishing their businesses in the city. And lastly, Iloilo City’s growth shares it progress with increased tourism.

A newcomer to the city of Iloilo doesn’t need to travel far to experience what the city has to offer. Over the years, the city has improved its tourism mechanism to attract more visitors. As such, it has continued to enhance its public plazas, historical churches namely Molo Plaza and Jaro Cathedral, and to create beautiful nature spaces such as the Esplanade for the people to enjoy. History, culture, and modernity mixes well in Iloilo City  – a testament to the city’s efforts in preserving the past and building for the future.

To be an Ilonggo is to be a witness of the city’s transformation. Previously plain roads is now dotted with skyscrapers, high-end condominium units and corporate buildings. Amongst all of these, Iloilo still remains a friendly and livable city because of the urban parks and recreation areas where Ilonggos can relax, enjoy the scenic Iloilo river and find solace amidst the bustle of the city.
