Public places such as sidewalks and plazas encounter foot traffic often and in large numbers. Most of the plazas and sidewalks in Iloilo are currently undergoing renovation using pavers. It may not be what Filipinos are used to, but pavers have many advantages.

Pavers in Public Places

While its widely used in European countries, pavers have gradually gained popularity here in the Philippines, especially in Iloilo, because of its aesthetics and durability. The most popular beautification projects in the province always include the use of paving blocks: Iloilo Esplanade, Jaro Cathedral, and even the sidewalks of Calle Real. Pavers, unlike concrete, give a classic and elegant style not only to homes but to public places as well.  And why is there a need to beautify public places? Culture or not, Filipinos like to congregate in one place for leisure and relaxation. Improving public places such as plazas attracts the people more, which improves socialization and therefore builds a thriving community.

By using concrete, we sacrifice whats essential in public places: beauty.  Yes concrete can be cost effective but pavers pose more advantages, especially in a country which has long seasons of rain. Pavers have spaces between them that allow for the water to seep through the ground. Its important for public places to have efficient drainage system as well, for without one, it could cause serious foot and vehicular traffic issues.

The walkability of pavers owes it to the sand installed underneath it. Because its not solid hard concerete, pavers have the capacity to cushion foot traffic because of the sand that softens each step. Thus walking on pavers have a lighter feel to it, unlike concrete that seems to drag each of your step.

Public places and sidewalks should not only be about functionality. It should also cater to attractiveness and beauty. And pavers can do both: its durable and last longer, and its classic beauty trumps that of a common concrete.
